What’s up, summoners?
Today we’re going to talk a bit about the newest hot topic hitting the rift next patch, and no, it’s not just one pretty champ that takes a million patches to nerf (cough). Nope, not one but two!You heard it folks, let’s introduce ourselves to the feathery couple in the spotlight, Xayah and Rakan.
Pretty interesting names, very attractive outfits, and interesting abilities. As Rakan, the support Charmer, protects AD Carry Xayah, together they make an impressive duo. Which of course, we’re all probably going to be tired of constantly seeing (and banning).
A little on their backstory as mentioned on the official League of Legends website:
“As mercurial as he is charming, Rakan is an infamous vastayan troublemaker and the greatest battle-dancer in Lhotlan tribal history. To the humans of the Ionian highlands, his name has long been synonymous with wild festivals, uncontrollable parties, and anarchic music. Few would suspect this energetic, traveling showman is also partner to the rebel Xayah, and is dedicated to her cause.”
Sounds like the attractive college guy from years ago that you probably had a crush on.
So as it seems, before Rakan had traveled outside of his home to accompany Xayah, he had lived his every day life in Ionia’s deep forests. He, along with others who live there, are the last of the Lhotlan vastaya (chimeric creatures, half human half beasts. ex: Ahri; Rengar; Nami) This kind of leads some curious minds to wonder whether he and Xayah have interacted with other LoL champs related to Runeterra, which is probably an obvious yes.
Also known as an “entertaining rogue,” Rakan is also known to go around taverns and
village festivals performing his dances to villagers and friends. As magical and charming as he may seem, he kind of reminds me of Gaston from Disney’s Beauty and The Beast. Though not entirely, because he doesn’t seem like some kind of self-obsessed dick.
As Vastayan women fall for the charmer, he peeps Xayah from the side of his eye and pretty much falls in love from there. (that’s more of a simplified way to put it)
Xayah, also known as “The Rebel” is yes, you guessed it, a badass I-want-nothing-to-do-with-you chick. Think of Raven from Teen Titans. She’s mysterious, aloof, and cooler than I am. It’s no wonder why Rakan is so attracted to Xayah, his “ayo ma’s” were probably met with sighs and shrugs.
Well, that’s pretty much how Riot describes it, she wasn’t totally into him as the other women were.
Xayah is much deeper than what she gives off. She’s a strong, independent woman who also leaves behind trails of dead bodies, hence giving her the title “The Violet Raven” Xayah is known to have a close connection to her father, who used to sing ancient folk songs about Vastayan heroes. As she learned about the history of her kind, she came to the realization that humans are destroying her home with every passing generation, dwindling down the numbers for her tribe. As she goes out into the dangerous world to seek answers, she returns home only to find her father gone.
Fast-forward, she met Rakan as he was performing for some villagers in a remote village. Unimpressed, she wrote him off as silly and whatnot and continued to finish her mission (which was to retrieve a stolen Vastayan artifact). Although relieved she finished what needed to be done, she couldn’t get him off of her mind. The pretty intense scene is best described through the words of Riot:
As she left town, Xayah was preoccupied by these strange thoughts, leaving her momentarily distracted to an ambush from a group of mercenaries. She had been expecting a fight, so she was glad to get her feathers bloody. A good brawl seemed the perfect antidote for useless diversions and unwanted feelings.
That was when Rakan made his grand entrance.
Xayah insisted she didn’t need the swaggering vastayan’s help. Rakan insisted he didn’t care—he just didn’t want to miss the party. Through the course of the fight, Rakan proved an unorthodox, but surprisingly dauntless and effective, ally. He leapt and pirouetted through the attackers who couldn’t take their eyes off him, providing Xayah ample time to strike them down with devastating accuracy.
Now, they pretty much go on adventures and have fun being the bad ass couple we all wish we knew in real life. The end.
